Gig Harbor from Tacoma — 25 minutes away
Cross the Narrows Bridge and you're in a different world. Half-day or full-day plans below.
Driving directions from Tacoma
Take WA-16 West across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. 25 minutes from downtown Tacoma to downtown Gig Harbor. The bridge is free westbound (toll only applies returning eastbound to Tacoma — $7 cash, $5.50 with Good To Go pass).
The half-day plan (4 hours)
If you only have half a day, this hits the highlights:
- 11:00 AM — Park at Skansie Brothers Park (free)
- 11:00–12:00 — Walk Skansie Park, the Netshed, and the Maritime Pier
- 12:00–1:30 — Lunch at Tides Tavern (deck, fish & chips)
- 1:30–2:30 — Gondola ride (book ahead in summer)
- 2:30–3:00 — Coffee + downtown stroll, head home
The full-day plan (8 hours)
Use our standard Gig Harbor day trip itinerary — the 25-min drive from Tacoma is short enough that you arrive fresh and leave with daylight to spare.
Tacoma stops on the way
If you're not in a rush, work in any of these on the drive:
- Point Defiance Park (5400 N Pearl St) — Add 30 min for a Rose Garden walk before crossing the bridge.
- Tacoma Narrows Bridge Viewpoint (eastbound park, 5 min stop) — best photo spot of the bridge.
- Ruston Way (Tacoma waterfront) — coffee at one of the dock-side cafés before heading west.
Best for Tacoma residents specifically
If you live in Tacoma and have done the standard tourist circuit, here's what's worth a return trip:
- Local breweries — 7 Seas, Wet Coast, Locust Cider all have taprooms not in Tacoma
- Kopachuck State Park kayaking — paddle to Cutts Island
- Morso — better wine list than most Tacoma small-plates spots
- The Devoted Kiss Cafe brunch — better than anything in Tacoma at the same price point
